Maria Schmidt

Mária Schmidt (Budapest, 1953) historian.

  • 1985 – Graduated from Budapest’s Eötvös Loránd University, Faculty of Arts as a teacher of History and German.
  • 1999 – PhD in history.
  • 2005 – ”Habilitated doctor” degree in the discipline of Historical Sciences.
  • 1996 – Senior Lecturer
  • 2010 –University Professor at Pázmány Péter Catholic University.
  • 1998-2002 – Chief advisor to Prime Minister Orbán. Director-General of the Twentieth Century Institute, the Twenty-first Century Institute and the House of Terror Museum.
  • 2002-2013 – trustee of the Ettersberg Foundation for the Study of European Dictatorships and their Transition to Democracy; former member of the Scientific Council of IICCMER The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile).
  • 2008 – Member of the Academic Committee of the House of European History project.
  • 2013 – Member of the World War One Centenary Memorial Committee and Chief Curator of the Exhibition devoted to the war and its aftermath.
  • 2015 –2017 Government commissioner in charge of the 2016 memorial year of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and war of independence. Member of the Academic Committee of the House of European History project.
  • 2019 – Government Commissioner in charge of the Memorial Year of the 30th anniversary of the transition to democracy in 1989/90.
